IRSym'08 Unconference

We're trying something new this year at IRSym: an unconference format where the participants set the agenda. The aim is to create an opportunity for lots of engagement, discussion, and interpersonal time. Here's how it works:
  1. At the Symposium, we'll have a big physical unconference board, which is a 2D table where the rows are 1/2 hour time slots and the columns are locations. Each entry in the table is a potential unconference session.

  2. You can organize as many sessions as you want, at any time during the symposium, by signing up on the board. If you'd like to discuss something with one or more others, you sign up on the board. If you want to give a tutorial, put it on the board. If you want to propose a new research theme or project, put it on the board. If you want to do the same session twice, it's OK. And so on. No rules. Anything goes.

  3. If you want more than 1/2 hour for your session, sign up for contiguous slots.

  4. You can sign up on the board ahead of time by sending mail to Dave O'Hallaron (david dot ohallaron at intel dot com). Include the time, location (optional), session title, and a short abstract (optional) in your email.

  5. There is an IRSym discussion forum for discussing your unconference sessions. (must be VPN'd to access)

  6. If you organize a session, please send Dave O'Hallaron a short email after the session (just a few sentences) summarizing the discussion. These session summaries will be collected and distributed, and will form the agenda for the report-out sessions Friday morning, where each session organizer will give a brief verbal report (no slides!) on the discussions during their session. This way, everyone at the symposium will get a high-level sense of what was discussed.
